I wonder if some people have ever heard of the world "HUMBLE"??? Flaunting is just plain screwed up and what not...
**reading reading reading** Far better to think historically, to remember the lessons of the past. Thus, far better to conceive of power as consisting in part of the knowledge of when not to use all the power you have. Far better to be one who knows that if you reserve the power not to use all your power, you will lead others far more successfully and well.
**reading reading reading** Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.
I love to read... so many interesting lessons to learn!

You'd be surprised what it all has to do with life, love, and other mysteries.
Besides, it really gets important when doing stuff like filling out job applications, many jobs require very good English, and just generally not being considered dumb all fall under proper English. If you don't like lit, well, that's your loss, but it is a very important subject.
Besides. You can't get a psychology job by saying "L20 Psych LFJ w/Hospital-have med skl+sund pen of fort +30!!! kekeke free itamz plz!!! I gots pills!!!

Trust me, outside of guild wars i DONT sound like that. at all. I actually LOVE to read, but i HATE reading stuff that i don't understand. I have went to the stupid writing center and explained my trouble with writing about something i can't read and they just stare at me blankly and say "we help you write!" Well thats great, and i CAN write really well. But i have never, in my 18 years of life, had to discuss these types of things, and I can't do it if someone doesnt help. I just can't read things that have words that are 20 characters long, and it is 12 pages of that. The parts that I do understand are really boring to me, and I can't focus on them at all. and it is all about Justice and goverment, not love or life, which is what i DO like to read about.
And we don't learn at all how to read this stuff. The Professor just threw a book at us and gave us assignments - he won't help us to understand it either. Our class discussions consist of us talking among ourselves and he just stands there drinking his coffee, looking out the window. and no one else understands the stuff either, So everyone in the class is just about as helpful as I am to myself.
*crys* does anyone understand me? or agree with me?

Well, they're assuming a certain level of reading that, due to high school curricula being as they are, you may or may not have.
I've had to read things I didn't like, but slogging through and getting it done was how I chose to handle it.
Don't take my comment as meant to offend, but with people left and right disparaging English (in improper English no less) it was the perfect jumping-off point for a mini-rant.
My head hurts. I'mma go lay down now.

The difference is that in high school, the only things i did in english were presentations, and writing, and more writing, and more writing, and poetry, and more writing, And my first 3 years, I read a book in each english class, but it was the SAME book, i kid you not. Lord of the flies, and that doesnt really help me with reading what i have to read now.
I have always read books on my own, but they are mostly love stories, or teen related stories about drugs, or running away from home. I also read many books about teenagers with mental issues, such as cutting themselves, or anorexia - beacuse all of those things are intresting to me.
And yes i was a little offended, mainly beacuse i just got off of the phone with my mother and she pretty much said exactly what you said - That English was important and that i need it and so on, and I didn't want to hear it again, Plus i thought your post was directed toward me completely.
Anyway, Hope your head feels better.
I'm off to bed all *hugs, hugs and more hugs for all!*
